Whisk up the perfect traditional cup of matcha from home.

We love to see the surge in popularity of matcha over these past few years, just as much as we love to celebrate its origins and spread the word about how to make it for the optimal mmmatcha taste.

Learning how to make matcha is a centuries old tradition. Traditional matcha tea ceremonies are used to celebrate everything from the new year to opening a new jar of tea, and even today remain at the core of Japanese culture.

Of course, you don’t have to be part of a traditional ceremony to enjoy the peaceful ritual of making a matcha. Whether you’re catching up with friends or looking for a moment to yourself, here's how to whisk up the perfect matcha at home.

ingredients:

2 Perfect Matcha Spoons (1 tsp) unsweetened matcha OR 5 Perfect Matcha Spoons (2 ½ tsp) sweetened matcha powder

475 ml (16 oz) hot water 75-85°C (170-185°F), divided

Bamboo Matcha Whisk

Matcha Bowl

recipe:

  1. Pre-soak the whisk in warm water, and heat the matcha bowl by running it under hot water.

  2. Measure your matcha using a Perfect Matcha Spoon and add it to your bowl (if you’re using unsweetened matcha, sift it as you add it to your bowl)

  3. Add 60 ml (2 oz) hot water and form a paste by whisking in an “M” (for matcha!) formation (tip: if your water’s too hot the matcha will have a bitter taste so let it rest 5 minutes after boiling to reach the right temperature)

  4. Add another 60 ml (2 oz) hot water and continue whisking until you get a vibrant frothy foam

  5. Pour the whisked matcha green tea into your favourite Nordic Mug and fill with as much hot water as desired. Enjoy!
